The Big Island of Hawai’i was formed by the eruption of five shield volcanoes. These five volcanoes, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Hualalai, Kohala, and Kilauea are all considered sacred by the ancient Hawaiian people. Each volcano has its own unique history and geology, and visitors can see the aftermath of previous eruptions as well as any current lava flow on this helicopter tour.
The Kohala region is located on the northwest tip of the Big Island and is known for its diverse landscape. The huge area is made up of the Kohala Mountains, Kohala Coast, and the Kohala Forest Reserve which runs along the mountains. The opposite nature of the windward (wet) and the leeward (dry) side could not be more clear, with the northeast side of the region being lush and green, while the southwest side is dry and barren. The region is home to several waterfalls, including Hi’ilawe Falls, which is said to be the tallest waterfall in Hawaii.
Hapuna Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the Big Island and is consistently ranked among the top 10 Hawaiian beaches. With its white sand and clear blue waters, it’s easy to see why. The beach is located in the Kohala Coast region and is known for its consistently good conditions for swimming, sunbathing, and snorkeling. It is also a popular spot for bodyboarding. During the early part of the year, it’s possible to spot migrating whales in the distance as well.
