Exclusive Doors Off Oahu Circle Island Tour Features
The Makapuu Lighthouse
Built in 1909, the Makapuu Lighthouse carries a rich history in its solid walls. Erected on a 600-foot sea cliff, this historic sentinel was designed to guide mariners away from the perilous reefs lying off the windward side of Oahu. The 1000-watt light bulb can be seen for almost 30 miles, making it the most powerful light in the Hawaiian Islands. Over the years, the lighthouse has stood firm, weathering powerful winds and stormy seas. As you glide past in your doorless helicopter, feel the rush of the sea breeze and marvel at the bright red and white lighthouse as it contrasts with its surroundings.
Diamond Head
On this tour, we will sweep toward Diamond Head, one of the most recognized landmarks in Hawaii. This dormant volcanic cone, known to Hawaiians as Lēʻahi, has a history that dates back thousands of years. It was named Diamond Head by 19th-century British sailors who were fooled by the glittering calcite crystals in the rocks, mistaking them for diamonds. Today, the crater forms a stunning backdrop for Waikiki's skyline. As you soar overhead, you'll have a prime view of this impressive geologic formation and gain a deeper understanding of Hawaii's volcanic past. You might even catch a glimpse of hikers making their way up the trail to the peak, where they are rewarded with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Honolulu.
Ka'a'awa Valley
Many guests say their favorite part of the tour is the flyover of Ka'a'awa Valley, known as 'Jurassic Valley' due to its fame as a filming location for the Jurassic Park movies. This lush, verdant valley on the windward side of Oahu is steeped in history and local legends. It is believed to have been an important agricultural area for early Hawaiians, who cultivated taro and bananas amidst its fertile soils. Many ancient heiau (Hawaiian temples) are scattered throughout Ka'a'awa Valley, further testament to its historic significance. The valley is also famous for its dramatic, sharp ridged mountains, which create an incredible backdrop that contrasts beautifully with the valley's green, fertile floors. As you soar above in the helicopter, you'll get a bird's eye view of this amazing landscape and feel the echo of its rich history.
